China Mobile IoT, Huawei, and STEP Sign Memorandum of Understanding on Wireless Elevator Networking Cooperation
2017-05-25
On May 24, China Mobile IoT Co., Ltd., Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., and Shanghai STEP Electric Co., Ltd. announced the signing of a cooperation agreement on wireless elevator networking. Focused on driving innovative development in the elevator industry, the agreement aims to promote safety, intelligence, ecological sustainability, innovation, and collaboration. The three parties will engage in extensive cooperation centered around “Wireless Elevator Networking,” comprehensively advancing the development of the wireless elevator networking industry.
Elevators are indispensable “vertical” transportation tools for developing the national economy and improving people’s livelihoods. As the number of elevators rapidly increases, the safety situation surrounding them has become increasingly serious. It has become an inevitable trend to further strengthen elevator safety management by adopting scientific, information-based, and networked approaches.
Through tripartite collaboration, we are leveraging wireless elevator networking technology to monitor elevator operations, ensuring elevator safety, enhancing operational and maintenance efficiency, and driving the transformation of the traditional elevator industry. Currently, the wireless elevator networking system has been launched and deployed in cities including Chongqing, Hangzhou, Wuhan, and Xi'an. The next step is to expand its deployment scope and achieve large-scale commercial implementation. The mission of this technology is to solve problems and serve the public; the wireless elevator networking solution—born from network innovation—will provide reliable protection for every elevator ride people take.

Zhao Zhipeng, Vice President of Huawei’s LTE Product Line: “The IoT is transforming production and service models across all industries, and China has already taken a leading position in the IoT field. Huawei is committed to research and innovation in communication technologies, leveraging wireless communication technologies to enable the digital transformation of traditional industries. Elevators are among the most representative special-purpose equipment; Wireless Elevator Interconnection—a groundbreaking application based on cellular network technology—can help the elevator industry reach new heights in safety management. We hope that the three parties will strengthen their sharing of technical and market information and jointly build a bright blueprint for the future development of Wireless Elevator Interconnection.”
Hu Zhitao, Vice President of STEP: “STEP positions itself as a technology-driven company and has invested over six years in R&D in the elevator IoT field. The company places great strategic emphasis on IoT. We look forward to collaborating and exploring new opportunities in IoT technologies and business models, working together to expand and strengthen the elevator connectivity industry. STEP business also covers areas such as industrial robots and new-energy vehicles, and we hope to forge even deeper and more extensive partnerships with China Mobile and Huawei.”
Ding Yuan, Deputy General Manager of the Solution Center at China Mobile IoT Company: Since 2008, China Mobile IoT Company has been paying close attention to and piloting IoT applications for elevators, and has already achieved large-scale deployments in multiple cities. Through collaboration with STEP and Huawei, the company is introducing more advanced communication technologies to develop market-oriented products that better meet the needs of elevator connectivity. The three parties can engage in deep cooperation across technology, products, and markets, jointly promoting the development of the wireless elevator networking industry.
Leveraging IoT technologies based on TD-LTE cellular networks and China Mobile’s high-quality, ubiquitous coverage provided by its more than 1.5 million base stations, we have established a robust network foundation for the development of wireless elevator intercom systems. The collaboration among the three parties will focus on systematically addressing elevator safety issues, striving to build a smart elevator ecosystem, leading the sustainable development of the elevator industry, and making due contributions to ensuring the safe operation of urban elevators, promoting the intelligent transformation of elevators, and supporting the construction of smart cities.
