The Shanghai Municipal Industrial Foundation Strengthening Special Project, “Centralized Robot Intelligent Servo Drive,” has successfully passed its acceptance inspection.

On March 16, entrusted by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, the Shanghai Research Center for Economic and Informatization Development organized and convened a project acceptance meeting for the 2019 Shanghai Industrial Foundation Strengthening Special Project—“Centralized Robot Intelligent Servo Drive”—undertaken by Shanghai STEP Robot Co., Ltd. The expert panel unanimously agreed that Shanghai STEP Robot’s “Centralized Robot Intelligent Servo Drive” project had passed the acceptance test. The project has completed the contents stipulated in the project agreement, achieved the project implementation goals and performance indicators, and played a significant role in supporting the intelligent development of domestically produced robots.

Shi Wenlu, Deputy Director of the Technical Progress Division of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology, and Dai Xiujun, Chief of the Technical Progress Section of the Jiading District Commission of Economy and Trade, attended this meeting.

The centralized robotic intelligent servo system is a multi-axis drive and control system that integrates servo drive technology and robot control technology. By adopting centralized drive control, this system eliminates the hassle of wiring and avoids signal interference, significantly enhancing the robot’s level of integration. By integrating the drive and control system into the robot’s base or body, it reduces the need for heavy-duty cables, lowers costs, and minimizes external interfaces, thereby improving the reliability of the robotic system. Compared to traditional systems that combine robot controllers with separate servo drives, this centralized system offers advantages such as lower cost, higher integration, and superior performance.

This project conducts comprehensive research on technologies such as modularity, intelligence, and high efficiency and energy saving for centralized robotic intelligent servo drives. The technical specifications of the developed centralized robotic intelligent servo drive products have all reached or surpassed those of imported brands. According to a novelty search conducted by the Shanghai Science and Technology Novelty Search and Consultation Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the comprehensive technology of STEPeng industrial robots applied in this project has reached the international advanced level. It has promoted the high power density, intelligence, and safety levels of domestically produced robotic systems.

During the construction of this project, a total of 21 patents were applied for, including 12 invention patents, and 2 papers were published. The realization and mastery of the centralized robotic intelligent servo drive technology by STEP have enabled domestic manufacturers to achieve differentiation, reduce costs, and compete with foreign brands. At the same time, this has also brought about the additional effect of increasing the market share of domestically produced robots and other automation products.

The application of the project’s outcomes has enhanced the technological level of key components such as robot control systems, servo systems, and software systems, thereby fostering the robust development of upstream and downstream industrial chains. Thanks to the superior performance of the centralized robotic intelligent servo drive, both the precision and cycle time of the robot body have been significantly improved. As a result, the application of robots has expanded from simple material handling and loading/unloading to high-end applications such as arc welding, spraying, and assembly, laying a solid foundation for the explosive growth of robot adoption.

The successful development of this project will help enhance users’ acceptance of domestically produced industrial robots, break the monopoly held by foreign high-performance robots, and promote the upgrading and modernization of domestic equipment as well as the advancement of automation levels, thereby generating a positive demonstration effect.
