Localization of Key Ship Equipment | STEP high-performance converter for brush-type excitation shaft-driven generators has been successfully installed on board!
2025-02-21
Recently, STEP has formed a strong partnership with a well-known domestic enterprise specializing in marine electrical control and drive systems, successfully developing a high-performance converter for domestically produced brush-type excited shaft-driven generators—a breakthrough innovation. The converter has now been smoothly installed on board ships and has successfully passed the trial voyage acceptance tests. This significant innovative achievement has broken the long-standing monopoly held by foreign brands in this field, injecting powerful momentum into China’s shipbuilding industry’s low-carbon transformation.

Centered around the AS710M inverter
STEP has established a comprehensive solution system in the field of shaft-driven power generation technology, covering both permanent-magnet shaft-driven power conversion technology and electric-excited shaft-driven power conversion technology. The newly developed high-performance converter for brushed electric-excited shaft-driven generators is centered around the advanced AS710M series frequency converters and adopts an advanced dual-PWM conversion topology. During operation, this converter can dynamically adjust in real time the magnetic flux of the generator’s stator and rotor, ensuring stable output of high-quality three-phase sinusoidal waves over a wide speed range of the main engine. At the same time, it features three core capabilities: thermal disconnection for grid connection, long-term online networking, and independent load carrying, enabling it to easily handle complex operating conditions such as sudden changes in the main generator speed or unexpected load fluctuations.

Flexible combination, suitable for multiple scenarios.
The AS710M series variable frequency drives are water-cooled, engineering-grade drive systems featuring a common DC bus architecture. Their modular design includes a thyristor-based three-phase full-bridge rectifier unit and an IGBT-based three-phase full-bridge inverter unit, allowing flexible configurations to create two-quadrant, four-quadrant, or multi-drive VFDs. The control unit is compatible with a variety of control algorithms, comprehensively meeting the diverse application requirements of ships—from the power generation side to the power consumption side.
This product is designed in strict compliance with CE certification standards and has obtained a certification certificate from the China Classification Society. Its quality and performance have both been rigorously certified by authoritative bodies, providing solid and reliable technical support for the low-carbon transformation of ships.
