Application of the Xinshida AS710M Inverter in Reducing Emissions and Improving Efficiency of Ship Shaft-Generation Systems in the Marine Electrical Industry
Project Background
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has mandated the implementation of amendments to “Annex VI of MARPOL—Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships,” effective January 1, 2023. Some vessels have already begun adopting new technologies or equipment to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions; among these, shaft-driven power generation technology for ships represents a solution that is both simple in architecture and highly cost-effective.
Customer needs
Energy conservation and emission reduction, simplifying the transmission structure, reducing the need for daily mechanical maintenance and upkeep, improving overall system efficiency, and adapting to a wider range of main engine speeds.
Xinshida Solution
Scheme advantages
Sensorless vector control
Without a speed sensor, this solution reduces hardware costs and maintenance requirements, as well as the number of potential failure points. It offers higher reliability in harsh environments such as those with vibration, dust, and humidity, and in space-constrained applications. Moreover, it maintains stable performance over a wide speed range.
Intelligent lane-changing technology
Supports online hot plugging and parallel operation, as well as manual/automatic grid-connection modes. Power distribution can be evenly shared or custom-configured, and a single button allows for precise matching of the required power demand.
Dual-PWM conversion technology
The power factor is adjustable, with THDU ≤ 5%. It supports stable output over a wide range of host speeds—from 65% to 135%—ensuring high-quality AC voltage on the inverter side and guaranteeing efficient and safe operation of the equipment.
Smart Island Control
Supports island-mode operation and features emergency protection. In the event of a VFD failure during island operation, the diesel generator will automatically start and connect to the grid to transfer the load, ensuring uninterrupted power supply.
Intelligent Power Management
When the main engine slows down, the shaft generator system’s available power decreases, and non-critical loads (primary/secondary load shedding devices) are automatically disconnected to ensure stable operation of the shaft-driven generator system. During vessel slowdown (SLOW Down), the intelligent system sheds non-essential loads, prioritizing navigation safety.

Project Results
The successful technological upgrade of the vessel “LUCKY CARINA” has yielded significant economic and environmental benefits. The ship’s energy efficiency has improved by approximately 10%. During navigation, the vessel now saves about 2 tons of fuel per day, resulting in annual fuel savings that generate economic benefits exceeding 1.8 million yuan. This has substantially reduced operating costs and enhanced the vessel’s profitability. Moreover, the application of energy-saving technologies has further optimized the ship’s propulsion system, extending the service life of equipment and effectively lowering maintenance costs.
