STEP successfully completed the remote commissioning of high-voltage variable frequency drives for the Russian natural gas project.

Since 2008, the STEP AS800 series high-voltage frequency converters have been exported in large quantities to countries including Thailand, Uzbekistan, Japan, Ukraine, and Russia. Over the past decade and more, the stable operation of these frequency converters has laid a solid foundation for STEP expansion into overseas markets with its high-voltage products.

Recently, STEP signed a contract with a Russian agency company for a natural gas pump application project. The contract covers multiple high-voltage variable frequency drive systems. Equipment commissioning was conducted remotely by STEP technical support team, while the agency independently completed the commissioning process. This project marks another successful deployment of STEP high-voltage VFD equipment in the Russian market and provides the Russian agency with valuable technical expertise and reserves.

Overcome the challenges posed by environmental factors and time zone differences to ensure the remote debugging task is completed on time and with high quality.

Due to the region’s harsh, cold geographical and climatic conditions, the customer requested that our inverter be able to automatically control the start and stop of the cooling fan based on ambient temperature, thereby achieving a low-energy cooling solution through ambient-temperature sensing. The service engineers and R&D engineers from STEP immediately responded and developed a customized fan-control solution, guiding the customer to upgrade their inverter’s cooling fan with intelligent temperature-sensing control. This exceeded the customer’s technical expectations.

During equipment commissioning, STEP engineers first had to overcome the impact of time differences, so they adjusted their working hours to midnight Beijing Time. To ensure a smooth commissioning process, STEP service engineers also worked closely with sales representatives in advance to jointly develop a comprehensive commissioning guideline.

  Debugging Guidance Procedure

In this application of high-voltage frequency converters to a natural gas project, given the remote location of the end customer, STEP engineers used methods such as recording videos on test benches to verify the various functions that need to be implemented. This approach not only reduces the time required for on-site commissioning by agency engineers but also helps avoid functional errors that could delay the commissioning process.

Thanks to the joint efforts of both parties, the project’s commissioning was ultimately completed smoothly. The Russian agent and end customers were thrilled with the achievement of all on-site technical indicators, and they expressed their recognition and gratitude for the efficient and convenient remote commissioning services as well as the local technical support provided by STEPeng.

Advantages of the STEP AS800 series high-voltage variable frequency drives when applied to pump systems:

  1 Energy-saving control

Maximize the utilization of electrical energy by automatically adjusting the operating frequency according to operational conditions, thereby saving energy and reducing consumption.

  2 Flexible drive

The startup is smooth and free of impact, employing a predefined S-curve acceleration to avoid mechanical shocks and current surges on the power grid caused by direct starting at line frequency.

  3 Reduce losses

Extend the service life of equipment, operate the variable-frequency-driven pump in its optimal power range, and reduce the workload associated with maintenance and repairs due to mechanical damage.

  4. Reduce noise

After the variable-frequency speed control retrofit, the motor’s operating speed slowed down significantly, thereby effectively reducing the noise generated during pump operation.

The novel coronavirus is spreading rapidly across the globe. To meet the service demands of overseas customers for STEP products, STEP service engineers have stepped up training efforts for overseas agents and partners, ensuring that our customer-centric service philosophy reaches every corner of the world. This remote commissioning process itself serves as a training session for the agents. In the future, STEPeng will continue to deliver even more user-friendly, high-quality products, providing powerful support to an increasing number of industrial customers.
