The outbreak seemed to sweep across Shanghai overnight, plunging this once-bustling city into quietude. As time passed, under the leadership of the Party and the government and with the concerted efforts of every member of society, the epidemic is gradually being brought under control—step by step. This is a journey toward victory, yet it’s also a long one.
With the onset of the pandemic, the company switched to closed-loop production in April. To ensure that we could continue delivering products to our customers and minimize the impact caused by the epidemic, several hundred employees lived and worked at the company, tirelessly pressing on with production around the clock. Seeing everyone’s hard work at the factory, even as stores were closing and transportation became difficult, the union organized staff members to deliver a batch of milk to the factory using electric scooters, so that everyone could enjoy a refreshing glass of milk and recharge after their long hours of labor.
Before we knew it, more than a month had passed. As the epidemic has been brought increasingly under control, the government has gradually relaxed some of its restrictions, giving everyone more room to engage in various activities. Seeing that they could once again take initiative and do things on their own, Chairman Hu from the company’s trade union federation arranged for union staff to contact nearby shopping centers and immediately place an order for a batch of milk, as a gesture of care and appreciation for the employees who had been working in closed-loop production for dozens of days. At the same time, considering that the employees had been living in the company for nearly two months amid relatively tight supplies and hadn’t eaten anything other than the company-provided boxed meals for a long time, just before the Dragon Boat Festival, Chairman Hu again instructed union staff to reach out to shopping centers and help procure a variety of items—including zongzi, milk, cakes, and bread—so as to prepare special festival care packages for the employees. This way, during their breaks from work, they could savor once-familiar flavors that they hadn’t tasted in ages.
As a traditional Chinese festival, the Dragon Boat Festival is said to have originated in commemoration of Qu Yuan. In real life, however, the Dragon Boat Festival marks the day of the year when herbs and medicinal plants reach their peak potency—making it the perfect time to ward off evil spirits and dispel epidemics. May this fragrant aroma of zongzi, sent by the union, bring everyone good luck, a ray of hope, and help clear away illness and epidemic woes, enabling us all to soon return to our former bustling, everyday routines.
