Boosting Product Design Reliability | STEP Academy Holds Training on “DFM—Reliability Design for Manufacturing”

The crisp autumn air brings a refreshing coolness—another school year is upon us. On September 1, 2022, under the organization of STEP Academy, leaders and engineers from the company’s R&D, process engineering, and quality departments gathered at the Meiyu Road factory of Shanghai STEP Company for a two-day event. DFM—Reliability Design for Manufacturing Training.

With the continuous emergence of new projects and technologies at the company, during the process of developing and introducing new products, we often encounter issues such as a cumbersome product introduction workflow that leads to excessively long development times. This not only affects delivery schedules but also results in product quality problems due to poor product and process designs, causing numerous challenges when launching mass production. Therefore, how to shorten the development cycle, improve product design quality and manufacturing process standards, reduce design costs, and prevent mass-production quality issues has become an essential challenge that product development must address—and a pressing new issue that urgently needs to be resolved in R&D work.

Before the training began, Mr. Qian Wei, Assistant to the Chairman of STEP Academy, introduced to the participants the significance and objectives of this course. He encouraged everyone to diligently study DFM knowledge and apply the design concepts and methods oriented toward manufacturing to the company’s project R&D efforts.

After the training began, Mr. Huang Wei, a senior consultant at Zhiyuan Yi Consulting, first introduced the definition of DFM—Design For Manufacturing, or reliability design oriented toward manufacturing. He then provided a detailed explanation of: DFM and concurrent engineering, DFM and mistake-proofing design, the design of tooling and fixtures in DFM projects, and the process technology and logistics design in DFM projects. It also introduced DFM quality management, component part number BOM management, product data management, and project engineering change management An important management method commonly used in projects.

Throughout the entire training course, Teacher Huang interspersed real-life case studies drawn from his many years of experience in factory management. His vivid and engaging explanations enabled the participants to grasp the course content easily and intuitively. In both class sessions and during breaks, Teacher Huang patiently and meticulously addressed the questions raised by the participants, fostering active interaction and exchange.

The two-day training session featured a wealth of content. Through this course, participants broadened their perspectives and deepened their understanding of product development. They further gained insights into the methodologies and logical frameworks for New Product Introduction (NPI) and Design for Manufacturing (DFM)—tools that focus on manufacturing reliability—from the perspective of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). This laid a solid foundation for their future application in product development. We also believe that the participants’ best practices in subsequent development projects will better support the successful implementation of NPI initiatives in terms of manufacturing reliability.
