STEP | The first batch of Shanghai Intelligent Factories—and a robot factory with an annual production capacity of 10,000 units—have begun operations.

1. Shanghai Municipal Conference on Promoting Intelligent Manufacturing

On December 22, the 2020 Shanghai Intelligent Manufacturing Promotion Conference was held in Jiading District. The conference was themed on using intelligent manufacturing to drive high-quality development. Guests attending the event included Zhang Jianming, Deputy Director of the Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology; Shen Huadi, Deputy District Mayor of Jiading District and Party Secretary of the District CPPCC; Mao Junfa, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Huang Ou, President of Shanghai Electric Group; and Xu Honghai, President of the Shanghai Intelligent Manufacturing Industry Association.

Deputy Director Zhang Jianming delivered a speech pointing out that Shanghai remains committed to regarding the development of intelligent manufacturing as a key pillar for enhancing the city’s overall capabilities and core competitiveness, and is accelerating the transformation and upgrading of its manufacturing sector toward digitalization, networking, and intelligence. In accordance with the work arrangements made by the Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal Government, the Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology has been actively promoting the in-depth development of intelligent manufacturing and has achieved phased results.

For the next phase of work, we must uphold innovation-driven development, enhance our core capabilities in intelligent manufacturing, and strengthen efforts to harness emerging technologies and address technological bottlenecks. We must also remain application-led, deepen the promotion of intelligent manufacturing, and accelerate the intelligent transformation of key industries such as automotive, electronic information, and high-end equipment. We need to foster new growth drivers by vigorously supporting the development of system integrators and organizing promotional events for intelligent manufacturing system providers and industrial internet platforms. Moreover, we should pool resources from all sectors, solidly advance the construction of an intelligent manufacturing ecosystem, and strengthen industrial support systems—including parks, talent development, and financial services.

2. STEP smart factory produces 10,000 robots annually.

At the meeting, Zhang Jianming, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology (left), Shen Huadi, Deputy District Mayor of Jiading District (right), and Ji Yi, Chairman of STEP (center), jointly launched the operation of STEP smart robot factory, which has an annual production capacity of 10,000 robots. This project will establish a first-class robotics R&D center in China, with an annual production capacity of 10,000 industrial robots.

3. The First Batch of 20 Smart Factories in Shanghai

The ceremony for awarding plaques to the first batch of 20 smart factories in Shanghai was held at the meeting. These smart factories will play a leading role in driving the transformation toward intelligent manufacturing across various industries, thereby boosting the high-quality development of Shanghai’s manufacturing sector. In the future, building on the foundation of the initial 20 demonstration smart factories, Shanghai will establish more than two training bases, more than two industrial tourism attractions, and more than two exhibition centers.
