STEP | Supporting the Finals of the First Shanghai Industrial Robot Technology Application Skills Competition
2020-12-23

Oriental TV is reporting on this year's event.
On December 19, the inaugural Shanghai Industrial Robot Technology Application Skills Competition—also serving as the finals of the fourth National Industrial Robot Skills Application Competition—was officially held. The competition was jointly organized by five departments—the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology, the Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, the Municipal Education Commission, the Municipal Federation of Trade Unions, and the Municipal Communist Youth League Committee—and was undertaken by the Shanghai Institute of Electrical Science (Group) Co., Ltd.

Speech by Ruan Li, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology
Ruan Li, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. He began by thanking all participating organizations for their strong support. At the same time, he pointed out that the robotics industry is hailed as “the jewel atop the crown of manufacturing” and serves as an important indicator of a country’s level of scientific and technological innovation and high-end manufacturing. China is the world’s largest robotics market, and Shanghai is the country’s largest hub for the robotics industry. One-third of global robot production takes place in China, and one-third of China’s robot production occurs in Shanghai. The robotics industry is becoming a new hallmark of “Made in Shanghai.” The vigorous development of this industry cannot be separated from the robust support of a highly skilled workforce. This skills competition aims to provide a platform for a wide range of skilled professionals in the industrial robotics field to showcase their expertise, refine their craft, and foster a positive environment for the development of skilled talent. It also seeks to encourage relevant educational institutions to innovate their talent-development models, enhance their educational standards, and cultivate both urgently needed on-the-job personnel and future reserve talent for the industry’s growth. Ultimately, this initiative will provide solid skill-based talent support for Shanghai as it fulfills its “three major tasks,” strengthens its “four major functions,” and builds itself into “five centers.”

As the technical support provider, STEP has supplied competition equipment for this event. Meanwhile, STEP’ robotics service team is on-site at the event venue, providing technical support and ensuring the smooth operation of the competition equipment.

For this competition, STEP provided 26 sets of fidget spinner assembly workstations, utilizing STEP desktop robots and its subsidiary Zhongweixing’s SCARA robots. The system incorporates advanced technologies such as machine vision, quick-change grippers, and production-line tracking, comprehensively assessing the contestants’ overall capabilities in electrical engineering, mechanical design, software development, and fault diagnosis.

The current competition was officially launched in May of this year, with a total of 72 participants from vocational colleges, technical schools, and related enterprises across the city. Among them, 42 were teachers (employees) and 30 were students, with an average age of 27. After intense preliminary rounds, 50 outstanding contestants advanced to the final round, where they underwent a comprehensive assessment of their industrial robotics skills and overall professional competence through both theoretical examinations and hands-on practical competitions. The winning contestants will be given priority consideration for nominations for prestigious honors such as Shanghai Technical Expert, the May Day Labor Medal, and Shanghai Young Skilled Worker. Additionally, those who rank at the top will be recommended to participate in the 4th National Industrial Robotics Skills Application Competition, scheduled to be held next year.

The holding of this competition will encourage more skilled professionals to continuously acquire new knowledge and enhance their capabilities, foster a culture of craftsmanship, cultivate the spirit of craftsmanship, and steer Shanghai’s industrial robotics industry toward high-quality development.
