No more toothpicks needed when taking the elevator—STEP has launched a “contactless” elevator solution.

Protective measures such as using lighters, toothpicks, toilet paper, and plastic wrap when taking elevators have gone viral online. This clearly shows just how much importance everyone places on elevator safety. But beyond these makeshift solutions, are there any more scientific and efficient methods available?
Recently, STEP Electric Co., Ltd., located in Jiading, Shanghai, has launched a “contactless” elevator solution. How can you ride an elevator without touching the buttons? Let’s find out together.
At STEP Electric Co., Ltd., Jiang Xiaoyan, Director of Enterprise IoT Products, demonstrated to reporters the specific operational procedure for “contactless” elevator use. Before entering the elevator, users first need to scan the QR code posted at the elevator entrance using their mobile phones, thereby accessing the STEP Elevator Cloud WeChat mini-program. Next, they click on the “I Want to Take the Elevator” section, and the mini-program will automatically display the user’s current floor. Users can then select whether they want to go up or down, as well as specify their desired destination floor.
Jiang Xiaoyan: “For example, if I want to go upstairs, I just tap ‘Up’ in the mini-program, and the corresponding elevator button will light up. At the same time, I can see the elevator’s current operating status on the left side of the screen. When the elevator doors reach my floor, they’ll open, and then I can enter the floor number I’d like to go to—for instance, if I want to go to the fifth floor, a confirmation screen will appear. All I need to do is tap ‘Confirm.’”
Once a user enters the elevator, the target floor will automatically light up. The “contactless” elevator ride solution offers two operation modes: a WeChat mini-program and a mobile app. At the scene, we observed that employees using STEP elevators would open the mobile app in advance and then select their desired floor just before reaching the elevator entrance.
Fang Hailai: “It feels like other methods still involve some degree of contact, and using sharp objects isn’t safe either. This ‘contactless’ elevator-use solution is relatively more reliable.”
In terms of data security, data encryption is implemented throughout the entire process of data collection and transmission for each elevator. Enterprises can effectively monitor and control the elevator ride process through the backend system.
This solution does not require adding any extra devices outside the elevator lobby or inside the cab—instead, it only necessitates installing an IoT gateway in the machine room, making operation particularly convenient. According to the plan, this “contactless” elevator solution will soon be gradually rolled out and put into use in key regions and cities across the country.
