STEP Robot’s Innovative Servo Technology | Awarded the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Prize

1. The Shanghai Science and Technology Awards Conference was held.

The Shanghai Science and Technology Awards Ceremony was held on the morning of May 15, solemnly recognizing science and technology workers who have made outstanding contributions to Shanghai’s scientific and technological endeavors and modernization drive. At the same time, the 2019 Shanghai Science and Technology Festival, themed “Mass Innovation—Advancing Toward a Globally Influential Center for Scientific and Technological Innovation,” was officially launched.

Li Qiang, Secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee

Li Qiang, Secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee, attended the meeting and emphasized the need to thoroughly implement the important speeches and instructions delivered by General Secretary Xi Jinping during his inspection of Shanghai, particularly those concerning the development of a science and technology innovation center. With the goal of becoming a major source of “new global academic ideas, new scientific discoveries, new technological inventions, and new industrial directions,” we must activate key driving forces, revitalize platform resources, boost industrial development, and invigorate the innovation ecosystem. We should accelerate our march toward becoming a globally influential science and technology innovation hub and strive to make greater contributions to China’s endeavor of building itself into a world-class science and technology power.
Shanghai Municipal Party Committee Deputy Secretary and Mayor Ying Yong presided over the conference. Yin Yitui, Director of the Standing Committee of the Municipal People’s Congress, Yin Hong, Deputy Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee, and municipal leaders Yu Shaoliang and Zhang Endi attended the event. Vice Mayor Wu Qing read out the commendation decisions at the conference. The municipal leaders presented awards to the winning representatives, extended warm congratulations to the honored groups and individuals, and extended sincere greetings to all science and technology workers throughout the city.

2. STEP awarded the Third Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress by Shanghai Municipality.

In 2018, the Shanghai Science and Technology Awards honored a total of 300 individuals and organizations. Ten individuals received the Young Scientists Outstanding Contribution Award; 28 achievements were awarded the Natural Science Award; 30 achievements received the Technological Invention Award; and 231 achievements were recognized with the Science and Technology Progress Award. Australian expert Zhang Shuting was awarded the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award.

Jiading, an important support area for Shanghai’s innovation and technology hub, saw 17 scientific and technological achievements from research institutes and enterprises in Jiading recognized (excluding those from universities). Among these, the project “Research and Development and Application of Key Technologies for High-Performance Robot-Specific Servo Motors and Drives,” jointly completed by Shanghai New Motion Electric Co., Ltd., Shanghai Singring New Motion Motor Co., Ltd., and Shandong University, was awarded the Third Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress by Shanghai Municipality.

STEP Award-Winning Representative

This project falls within the field of advanced manufacturing and core foundational component technologies. The high-performance servo system for robots developed under this project possesses key features required by modern robotics—such as intelligence, networking, high efficiency, modularity, and enhanced safety—and represents a significant technological breakthrough in the robotics sector. The project conducts innovative research in five core technology areas: intelligent parameter tuning technology that eliminates the need for manual debugging; adaptive bus interfaces and high-precision synchronization technology among nodes; energy-saving technology for servo systems under minimum energy consumption constraints; optimization technology for servo motors that deliver high responsiveness, high energy efficiency, and low torque ripple; and intrinsic safety technology for servo systems. Following review by an expert panel and a novelty search conducted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, it has been determined that the project’s products exhibit creativity and novelty in both principle and design. They represent a substantial upgrade in terms of robotic industry demand, overall performance, and suitability for various application scenarios, with their comprehensive technical capabilities reaching internationally advanced levels.

During the implementation of this project, we obtained 10 nationally authorized invention patents and 9 utility model patents, and filed 12 invention patent applications. We also published 16 papers, led the development of 1 industry standard, and secured 7 provincial- and ministerial-level investment program projects.
