[Source: Shangguan News] As a shining gem in the Baltic region, Latvia enjoys inherent geographical advantages. Its capital, Riga, has served as a trade hub connecting Nordic countries with the European continent, as well as Western and Eastern Europe, since the Middle Ages.
This year marks the fifth anniversary of China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Over the past five years, the construction of the Belt and Road has attracted active participation from numerous countries around the world. On October 11, local time, the Latvia Pavilion at the 2018 China (Shanghai) International Fair for Technology Import and Export (referred to as the "Shanghai Fair") officially opened in Riga, the capital of Latvia. This year’s overseas exhibition features high-end equipment and technologies—including smart cities, energy equipment, nuclear power energy, intelligent manufacturing, and robotics. A total of 38 companies, including Shanghai Instrument & Electrical Equipment Group, Shanghai Electric, and Shanghai STEP, are participating in the exhibition.
Yu Jianlong, Secretary-General of the China International Chamber of Commerce, Sun Yinglai, Chargé d'affaires ad interim of the Chinese Embassy in Latvia, Liepina, Deputy State Secretary of the Latvian Ministry of Economy, and Ozols, Director of the Latvian Investment and Development Agency, along with guests from both countries, attended the opening ceremony and jointly cut the ribbon. In the afternoon of the 10th, local time, the China-Latvia Trade and Investment Exchange Conference was held in Riga. The event was attended by 150 representatives from government officials, business circles, and enterprises of both China and Latvia, who sought to expand cooperation opportunities and achieve greater outcomes through discussions on economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. The Shanghai International Technology Import & Export Promotion Center signed a memorandum of understanding with the Latvian Investment and Development Agency, while the Shanghai Elevator Industry Association and the Riga Chamber of Commerce each signed similar memoranda with their respective counterparts, aiming to further deepen cooperation.
The China (Shanghai) International Fair for Trade in Technology and Equipment (commonly known as the Shanghai Fair) is jointly hosted by the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Intellectual Property Administration, and the People's Government of Shanghai Municipality.

As part of the trade and economic activities accompanying this expo, the China-Latvia Trade and Investment Exchange Meeting and the Shanghai Night Reception were held on the afternoon of November 10, local time. During the events, Wang Gaojian, General Manager of STEP·Yixin International Trade Co., Ltd., signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation and exchange between enterprises from both countries on behalf of the Shanghai Elevator Association and the President of the Riga Chamber of Commerce.

During this period, a delegation from the Shanghai Elevator Industry Association, accompanied by leaders from the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and the Shanghai Municipal Commission for Promoting International Trade, paid a courtesy visit to the Riga Chamber of Commerce. They engaged in friendly discussions and exchanges on issues such as how Shanghai-based companies can expand into overseas markets. The signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation will help provide more effective and convenient one-stop services for businesses from both countries seeking to enter each other’s markets!
