STEP robotics business is experiencing rapid growth | The equipment manufacturing sector is booming, and “Shanghai Intelligent Manufacturing” is delivering outstanding performance.

[Shanghai News Comprehensive Channel] The development level of the equipment manufacturing industry—especially intelligent manufacturing—is an important indicator for measuring the industrialization level of a region and even an entire country. Data show that from January to June this year, Shanghai’s equipment manufacturing sector experienced rapid growth, with total output value exceeding 625.6 billion yuan, representing a year-on-year increase of 14%. Among these, intelligent manufacturing equipment performed particularly well: key areas such as industrial robot and intelligent manufacturing system integration saw year-on-year growth rates all surpassing 30%, making them a new driving force behind Shanghai’s industrial recovery.

Here is the STEP Electric factory located in Nanxiang, Jiading. A row of newly manufactured industrial robots is undergoing final testing and inspection. As a long-established Shanghai-based manufacturer of electrical control equipment, the company has been keenly seizing market opportunities in recent years. In addition to its traditional expertise in elevator control and drive systems, it has proactively expanded into the production of industrial robots.

Yuan Zhongmin, Vice Chairman of STEP: The first half of this year performed better than our expectations, with the group’s total sales revenue growing by 50%. Among these, the smart manufacturing segment is expected to account for 70% of our business.

The head of the enterprise told reporters that the surge in industrial robot sales is, on the one hand, attributable to companies’ proactive transformation efforts, and on the other hand, reflects the rapidly growing demand from downstream industries for intelligent manufacturing equipment such as robots.

Reporter Zhu Zhengyan: The robust development of Shanghai’s manufacturing sector in the field of intelligent manufacturing over the first half of this year is actually evident even from just one small robot. For instance, take this six-axis robotic product right here—its sales volume for the first half of this year has already exceeded 500 units, yet demand from the market still far outstrips supply.

According to the 13th Five-Year Plan for the Transformation and Upgrading of the Manufacturing Sector, Shanghai’s output value of intelligent manufacturing equipment is expected to reach approximately 50 billion yuan by 2020. While closely monitoring market demands, traditional enterprises are accelerating their transformation, and emerging companies are making a strong rise. Thanks to continuous investment in and application of new technologies, Shanghai’s equipment manufacturing industry is entering a new golden era.

Huang Ou, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology: In the first half of the year, the total output value of the equipment manufacturing industry reached 625.6 billion RMB, representing a growth rate of 14%, which was 5.8 percentage points higher than the overall growth rate of Shanghai's industrial sector. This policy approach—using demonstration projects to drive application, application to drive integration, and integration to drive equipment development—is an excellent example of such a strategy.
