Recently, there has been a surge in electric bicycle fire incidents, posing a serious threat to public safety. How can we promptly identify and detect this safety hazard? Shanghai STEP Electric Co., Ltd. has come up with its own solution.
In March of this year, STEP “Elevator Cloud” service launched an AI-powered camera equipped with battery-powered scooter detection capabilities. This device leverages advanced image recognition technology: as soon as it detects a battery-powered scooter entering the elevator, it immediately triggers an alarm and uses technical intervention to prevent the scooter from continuing its ascent. Compared to traditional alarm systems, this device not only uploads recognition data to the cloud platform in real time but also features basic video surveillance and audio intercom functions. Property management and elevator maintenance personnel can be promptly notified via an app or text message, and any illegal activity is recorded for future reference.
Gao Hao, Director of the Development Department at “Elevator Cloud,” stated that this AI camera is just one component of STEP “Elevator Cloud” service. The core of “Elevator Cloud” lies in its ability to anticipate and prevent potential hazards by efficiently processing data to precisely identify various risks during elevator operation.
Currently, the number of elevators in China has surpassed 10 million units, and a growing number of aging elevators are gradually revealing safety hazards. According to statistics, the average service life of elevators in China is 14 years, and many of the early-installed elevators are now entering an aging phase, with safety risks becoming increasingly prominent. To address this issue, the State Administration for Market Regulation has released the "Three-Year Action Plan for Strengthening Elevator Safety (2023–2025)," aimed at enhancing the safety management of elevators. However, irregular practices in elevator maintenance and upkeep still persist, further increasing safety risks.
Against this backdrop, STEP “Elevator Cloud” technology offers a new safety solution for the elevator industry thanks to its forward-looking and innovative approach. This system integrates cutting-edge technologies such as elevator IoT and cloud computing, using holographic communication technology to perceive and record the operational status of elevators in real time. By shifting from post-event alerts to proactive warnings, it enables fault prediction throughout the entire lifecycle of an elevator, providing scientific and efficient support for daily elevator management, regular safety inspections, and monthly maintenance planning.
