Shanghai STEP Robot Super Factory Listed Among the 2021 Pilot and Demonstration Factories for Intelligent Manufacturing

In 2020, the Shanghai STEP Robot Superfactory made a stunning debut, becoming one of the first 20 smart factories in Shanghai—and the sole representative from Shanghai’s robotics industry. In 2021, riding on the momentum of its earlier success, it once again distinguished itself by being the only robot manufacturer in China to be included on the list of 110 demonstration units for intelligent manufacturing in 2021.
On December 28, 2021, the website of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released an announcement公示ing the list of candidate pilot demonstration factories for intelligent manufacturing in 2021 as well as the list of outstanding scenarios. Among them, a total of five companies from Shanghai—including Shanghai New Motion Robot Co., Ltd.—were included on the list of pilot demonstration factories for intelligent manufacturing.
This inclusion on the list marks that the benchmark effect of intelligent manufacturing in complex discrete manufacturing, pioneered by Shanghai STEP Robot’s Super Factory, has received recognition at the national level.
Smart manufacturing is the primary focus of building a manufacturing powerhouse, and its development level is crucial to China’s global standing in the manufacturing sector. To implement the overall plan outlined in the 14th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development of the People’s Republic of China and the Visionary Goals for 2035, and to fulfill the requirements of the Smart Manufacturing Development Plan for the 14th Five-Year Period, as well as to deepen the promotion and application of smart manufacturing, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Finance, and the State Administration for Market Regulation have jointly decided to launch the 2021 Pilot Demonstration Initiative for Smart Manufacturing. The demonstration smart manufacturing plants will focus on specific sub-sectors within areas such as raw materials, equipment manufacturing, consumer goods, and electronic information. Centered around the entire manufacturing process—including design, production, management, and service—these demonstration plants will drive breakthroughs in manufacturing technologies, innovation in production processes, integration of diverse application scenarios, and re-engineering of business processes, thereby playing a leading and exemplary role. This initiative will further encourage more enterprises to adopt smart manufacturing and undergo transformation and upgrading, propelling smart manufacturing to a new level and fostering high-quality development of China’s manufacturing sector.
The Shanghai STEP Robotics Superfactory, officially put into operation in December 2020, is one of the first 20 smart factories in Shanghai. It is also Shanghai’s first fully operational intelligent robot manufacturing facility. With an annual production capacity of 10,000 industrial robots, all of the factory’s smart manufacturing projects were independently developed and integrated by STEP itself. These projects leverage cutting-edge manufacturing technologies on a large scale, enabling full-process intelligence and digitalization throughout the entire manufacturing cycle. The completion of this project will enhance STEP Robotics’ product quality and delivery capabilities, accelerate the pace of product, process, and service intelligence, and drive collaborative development across the industrial chain through technological innovation.
In October 2021, the National Development and Reform Commission issued a document pointing out that STEPeng Robot’s Super Factory has set a benchmark for intelligent manufacturing in complex discrete manufacturing. This represents STEP pioneering effort in the field of intelligent manufacturing and marks a milestone in Chinese robotics companies’ practice and exploration of intelligent manufacturing.
In the future, STEP will further explore ways to enhance its intelligent manufacturing capabilities, providing customers with high-quality industrial robot products and smart manufacturing solutions, building a premium robotics brand, empowering manufacturing enterprises, and facilitating the transition toward “Made in China 2.0.”
