2017-12-01
The finals of the first National Elevator Installation and Maintenance Skills Competition, jointly hosted by the China National Machinery Industry Federation, the China Employment Training Technical Guidance Center, the All-China Federation of Machinery, Metallurgy and Building Materials Trade Unions, and the Youth Development Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, were held on November 11, 2017, in Qihe County, Shandong Province.
167 teams are competing in the finals.
The competition consists of two stages: the preliminary round and the final round. In the preliminary round, more than 2,500 contestants from 18 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities across the country took part. After several rounds of rigorous selection, 167 teams comprising 379 contestants advanced to the final round. The final round features two competitive events—theory knowledge and practical operation—and is divided into four categories: elevator installation, elevator maintenance, escalator maintenance, and student maintenance.

The competitors who achieve first place in the overall results of each competition category will be recommended to the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, respectively, for the titles of “National Technical Expert” and “National Young Post Expert.” Enterprise-based competitors who secure first place in the overall results of the finals will be prioritized for nomination by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions to compete for the “National May Day Labor Medal.”

China's elevator stock is expected to surpass 5.6 million units.
During the competition, Li Shoulin, President of the China Elevator Association, stated that China’s elevator stock accounts for approximately one-third of the global total and is expected to surpass 5.6 million units by the end of this year. However, there is a severe shortage of skilled professionals in elevator maintenance and repair, resulting in a significant talent gap. He expressed hope that the competition will help foster a social atmosphere that values and respects skilled workers, inspire technical workers in the elevator industry to continuously learn and hone their skills, and raise public awareness about elevator safety.
