On January 6, in accordance with the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization’s deployment and the city’s “Promote Development, Ensure Safety” comprehensive visit and inspection campaign, Liu Ping, Deputy Director of the Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, led a team to Shanghai STEP Electric Co., Ltd. for a visit and research. The team examined the company’s R&D efforts and product sales in the industrial robotics sector and held an exchange and discussion meeting with Wu Yuhui, Director and General Manager of STEP, and his team, actively addressing the company’s concerns and demands.

Liu Ping listened carefully to briefings on STEP Company’s strategic development, scenario-based R&D, talent cultivation, and corporate operations. He pointed out that it is crucial to focus on the R&D of specialized robot scenarios with Chinese characteristics. Given the differentiated features of the Chinese robotics market, domestic robot enterprises need to find their own path for sustainable development amid fierce market competition. They should intensify their efforts to tap into niche markets for robots tailored to China’s unique scenarios and pursue complementary development with foreign robot giants. It is essential to remain firmly committed to achieving independent substitution of core components for industrial robots. In line with the “14th Five-Year Plan” for the development of high-end equipment industries in Shanghai, which emphasizes “core breakthroughs” as a key priority for the industrial robotics sector, we should support enterprises in independently developing high-performance servo motors and drives, high-performance controllers, and other critical components. Enterprises must build their own core competitive advantages. While ensuring production safety and product quality, robot companies should place great emphasis on controlling production costs and innovating their business models. Building a complete industrial chain ecosystem for industrial robots and unlocking the commercial value of data will be the two main directions for domestic robot enterprises in the future.
Shanghai New Motion Electric Co., Ltd. was established in 1995 and is a leading supplier of core products and comprehensive solutions in the field of intelligent drive and control. The company is dedicated to the development of intelligent control technologies, drive technologies, and related products. It is a key high-tech enterprise supported by the Chinese government and a nationally recognized innovative enterprise, and it houses a National Enterprise Technology Center. The company’s core business spans five major areas: electrical control, variable-frequency drives, motion control, robotics, and intelligent manufacturing. Adhering to a development strategy that emphasizes “scenario-driven R&D to fuel market expansion,” the company provides customized solutions tailored to the needs of both domestic and international customers and is currently further expanding its robotics markets at home and abroad.
