On the afternoon of November 6, Comrade Miao Wei, a member of the Central Lecture Group, a member of the CPC Central Committee, and Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, visited Shanghai New Motion Robot Co., Ltd. for a research visit and delivered a lecture on the spirit of the 19th National Congress to grassroots employees. Also present at the lecture were Xin Guobin, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology; Dong Yunhu, Member of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and Head of the Publicity Department; Zhou Bo, Member of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and Executive Vice Mayor of Shanghai; and Ma Chunlei, Member of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and Secretary of the Jiading District Party Committee, along with other municipal and district leaders. Jiyi, Chairman of New Motion; Yuan Zhongmin, Vice Chairman; Cai Liang, President; and other employees in attendance raised their respective questions, which Minister Miao Wei answered one by one, engaging in warm and friendly interactions with everyone.

Employee Jiao Yao When asking about the future prospects of the manufacturing industry, Minister Miao Wei Answer: In his report, General Secretary Xi devoted a specific section to promoting the development of advanced manufacturing. Our company, STEP, happens to be at the cutting edge of advanced manufacturing—we specialize in industrial robots. These areas represent the future direction of industrial development.

We must attach great importance to the development of the real economy.
Vice Chairman Yuan Zhongmin Question: We’ve been gradually transitioning from traditional manufacturing to intelligent manufacturing. Since the 19th National Congress, we’d also like to gain a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the central government’s plans and arrangements in this regard.
Minister Miao Wei Answer: Several years ago, General Secretary Xi cautioned us to attach great importance to the development of the real economy. China cannot shift from the real to the virtual. Manufacturing is part of the real economy and also the primary battleground for technological innovation; today, it is also the key area for supply-side structural reform. I believe that the company has great potential for future development. We are all living in a golden age—a time when we can harness our intelligence and creativity and make the contributions we are called upon to make.

Competition drives enterprises to continuously improve.
Employee Hu Tao Question: Recently, there was a report about Tesla saying that it will build a wholly-owned factory in China. This has given our manufacturing sector a very urgent sense—just like the arrival of foreign catfish, they’re really coming. Could you give us an estimate? If our robotics industry were to face such a situation, how many years would we have left?
Minister Miao Wei Answer: The entry of companies like Tesla into China is itself something we, as part of our reform and opening-up policy, warmly welcome. From another perspective, only by pursuing reform and opening-up can China chart the fundamental path for its development. Therefore, in this new era, we must further expand our opening-up to the outside world and engage in fair competition on an equal footing. Competition is the most effective means of driving enterprises to continuously improve and develop. We shouldn't be afraid; instead, we should leverage our strengths while minimizing our weaknesses, and fully harness our advantages to compete with these foreign-invested enterprises. In the process of competition, I believe a large number of Chinese enterprises will stand out and excel.
