Elevator Modernization | Case Study on Maintenance and Renovation of Elevator Control Systems
2024-12-13
“The last time I stayed here, I was absolutely terrified,” a guest told the hotel front desk early in the morning as he was checking out. “It really is time for some repairs. If it weren’t for the convenient location, I wouldn’t have come back this time at all.”
What could have so startled the guest? The story begins with the hotel elevator.
In Changchun, there’s a hotel that seamlessly combines guest accommodations with business meeting facilities. It’s located in the bustling heart of the High-Tech Zone, right next to Jilin University. It’s just a 5-minute drive from the southern highway entrance of Changchun City, a 5-minute drive to Baihuayuan Park in Changchun City, and only a 22-minute drive to Changchun Railway Station. The hotel enjoys a steady stream of guests and has received positive reviews on review platforms.

However, over the past year, two elevators manufactured in 1999 have become a major challenge for the hotel’s operations. These two elevators, each with a history of more than two decades, had previously served guests quietly and reliably. But as time has passed, various problems have gradually come to light.
Frequent malfunctions have become the new normal. The elevators occasionally emit strange noises; during operation, they suddenly jam or even come to an abrupt halt. Sometimes, the elevator doors fail to open or close properly, trapping guests inside and filling the confined space with anxiety and fear. These malfunctions not only spoil guests’ stay experience but also severely damage the hotel’s reputation and place a heavy burden on its daily operations.
Identify the cause of the fault.
After learning about the hotel’s predicament, STEP partners and the hotel management engaged in close communication and conducted a thorough on-site inspection and detailed analysis of the elevators. Soon after, the cause of the malfunction was identified: due to the elevators’ advanced age, their control systems had severely deteriorated, and their components were excessively worn.

Determine the renovation plan.
After repeated deliberations and validations, the renovation plan was finally finalized: to carry out a major overhaul of the elevator using the STEP C7000 series control system—a product that has been widely adopted by STEP in the elevator retrofit market over the past few years.

1. Fully functional and safe and reliable
The C7000 boasts powerful features such as intelligent debugging, downloadable fault logs, and self-learning balance coefficients. Its innovative base-clamping design, rapid high-voltage circuit acquisition circuit, and motor overheating protection without stopping further enhance the C7000’s safety and reliability.
2. Exquisite craftsmanship with unique artisanal ingenuity.
The C7000 all-in-one unit features a unique installation method, incorporating fully prefabricated wiring, integrated plug-in boards, error-proof wiring connections, and mechanisms to prevent accidental short circuits—design elements that showcase exceptional ingenuity.
3. Ultra-compact structure, with efficient heat dissipation.
The C7000 door structure features an innovative design, and the overall cabinet airflow duct is meticulously engineered to optimize heat dissipation for the all-in-one unit. The cabinet body is formed in a single stamping process, and the control cabinets with capacities ranging from (5.5 to 22) kW share a uniform external dimension of 1184 mm × 420 mm × 200 mm (height × width × thickness).
4. 8 specialized technologies
The C7000 control cabinet has been granted 3 invention patents, 2 design patents, and 3 utility model patents.

Renovation results
After intensive maintenance work, the aging components were replaced and the control system was completely upgraded. The two elevators have been completely refurbished, now running smoothly and quietly. Every step of the process is carried out strictly in accordance with national standards. Guests will no longer find themselves trapped in elevators, and the hotel’s service quality has been greatly enhanced. Under the supervision and inspection of the Changchun City Special Inspection Institute, the elevators fully comply with current national standards.
