Developing New-Generation Productive Forces: STEP in Action (Part 1)

2024 is destined to be a year of moving toward the “new.”

At this year’s Two Sessions, “new-quality productivity” has become a hot topic. On March 5, while attending the deliberations of the Jiangsu delegation at the second session of the 14th National People’s Congress, General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized that we must firmly grasp high-quality development as our primary task and develop new-quality productivity in ways suited to local conditions. In the government work report delivered on the same day, “strongly promoting the construction of a modern industrial system and accelerating the development of new-quality productivity” was listed as the top priority among the ten key tasks for 2024.

The proposal of "new-quality productivity" fully embodies the commitment to "always focusing on development, continuing to focus on quality, and placing even greater emphasis on innovation." So, how can enterprises become the main force in accelerating the development of new-quality productivity? STEP, approaching its 30th anniversary, offers its own answer: through relentless advancement in technological innovation, unwavering dedication to pioneering excellence, and continuous empowerment of high-quality industrial development.

Relying on scientific and technological innovation to develop new-quality productive forces.

Technological innovation is the core element driving the development of new-quality productivity. Since its establishment in 1995, STEP has consistently adhered to innovation-driven development, regarding independent research and development as the foundation of its existence. In the fields of elevator control, variable-frequency drives, motion control, and robotics, the company has developed a large number of original and disruptive proprietary core technologies, achieving a high level of self-reliance and independence.

STEP R&D and Testing Center

Let’s first take a look at a set of corporate honors and data: In 2011, STEP was honored as a National Innovative Enterprise, and in 2015, it was named— for the first time— National Enterprise Technology Center, And Successfully passed the review four times in a row ; As of the end of 2022, after STEP went public, Cumulative R&D investment totals 1.79 billion yuan. The proportion of R&D personnel is 39%, and they possess... 242 invention patents ; under its umbrella is 6 “specialized, refined, distinctive, and innovative” enterprises, Two of them are national-level “specialized, refined, distinctive, and innovative” Little Giant enterprises.

Looking back over the past 29 years, STEP has started from the elevator industry and, firmly committed to a path of independent innovation, has carried the torch forward without interruption.

By introducing CAN bus communication technology from the automotive industry into elevator control systems, STEP was among the first to achieve group control of eight elevators and pioneered a groundbreaking 6.3-meter-per-second ultra-high-speed elevator retrofit technology... STEP has made significant contributions to technological breakthroughs in China’s elevator industry, subsequently delivering a host of exemplary projects of world-class sophistication, including the Shanghai Luban Building, Hongqiao Shanghai City, Hengji Building, Liaoning Radio and Television Tower, University of Toronto in Canada, and Central Park in Caracas, Venezuela.

Today, as the undisputed global leader in elevator control systems, STEP continues to embrace a relentless, technology-driven approach, seamlessly integrating cutting-edge technologies such as AI, IoT, and military-grade blockchain encryption into its cloud-based elevator products. This enables the company to build new forms of productive forces, not only elevating elevator maintenance and servicing standards and delivering differentiated value to customers, but also actively fostering a new digital ecosystem within the industry. As of now, STEP Elevator Cloud has now achieved precise integration with over 30 local government platforms.

By stepping onto the track of intelligent manufacturing, STEP has been steadily accelerating forward, thanks to its deep-rooted expertise in motion control technology and its spirit of pragmatism and innovation.

As another key area driving the development of new-quality productivity, STEP has, through forward-looking R&D, mastered a range of critical core robotic technologies—including high-order dynamics algorithms, vibration suppression techniques, trajectory planning technologies, and static precision compensation technologies. The self-sufficiency rate for robotic technologies has reached 60%, and its key performance indicators—such as stability, positioning accuracy, and noise reduction—now rival those of leading international brands. STEP has developed a robotic product portfolio comprising nine series with a payload range from 1 kg to 600 kg, totaling over 80 models. To date, its cumulative shipments have exceeded 40,000 units.

In 2023, the fourth-generation robot control cabinet product, SRC4, was launched. Not only does it achieve an industry-leading compact size, but it also brilliantly resolves the longstanding contradiction between small size and heat dissipation. Its advanced technology quickly stirred up a wave of excitement throughout the industry.

Mr. Liang Rui, President of STEP, once stated that the successful development of the fourth-generation cabinet not only stems from STEP strong technological capabilities but also highlights the company’s flexible and efficient corporate characteristics. Cross-disciplinary, multi-department teams can break down barriers, collaborate for mutual benefit, and go all out for a single project.

Technological innovation is also evident in manufacturing. STEP continuously increases its investment in upgrading production lines and processes, strengthening its “intelligent manufacturing” capabilities to enhance production efficiency, customization capabilities, product quality, and cost control. Currently, the company operates two smart factories in Shanghai.

Building a modern industrial system that is independently controllable, secure and reliable, and highly competitive requires strong support and active participation from Chinese enterprises. So, what achievements has STEP made in this regard? Stay tuned for next week’s report!
