Developing New-Generation Productive Forces: STEP in Action (Part 2)
2024-03-19
Looking back, STEP has proactively integrated itself into the national strategic science and technology framework, participating in major national projects and engineering endeavors. Its technologies and products have been applied to “national flagship projects” such as the Beijing-Zhangjiakou High-Speed Railway, the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, the Dongfanghong-3 scientific research vessel, the Hangzhou/Suzhou/Ningbo urban rail transit systems, the Tianmen Sightseeing Tunnel, and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, thereby highlighting STEP innovative strength.
So, against the backdrop of “strongly promoting the development of a modern industrial system,” how will STEP demonstrate the sense of responsibility and proactiveness expected of a private technology enterprise? Today, let’s take a look at the second installment of our series!
Strengthen supply chain resilience and ensure the autonomy and controllability of the industrial system.
During the 11th collective study session of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized that we must strategically arrange industrial chains around the development of new-quality productive forces, enhance the resilience and security level of industrial and supply chains, and ensure that our industrial system remains independent, controllable, safe, and reliable.
In the STEP Robot Intelligent Factory, arc welding robots are rolling off the assembly line one after another. After undergoing a 72-hour full-load, full-speed warm-up test, they will soon be delivered for use in the welding and assembly processes on automotive production lines. These robots come from... Made in the entire Yangtze River Delta The plan—its bearings, servo motors, gearboxes, and other first- and second-level components, as well as the main body itself—are all of “Chinese origin.”

In July 2022, the “All of the Yangtze River Delta Manufacturing” robotics initiative, led and organized by the Shanghai Commission of Economy and Information Technology, was launched to mitigate the risks to industrial chains and supply chains caused by the high degree of reliance on imported core components for industrial robots. Under this initiative, STEP Robotics has been nominated as the “chain leader” for the first round.
Through redesign of components, laboratory validation, and user testing, the robot has achieved quality comparable to that of foreign brands while offering superior service and price competitiveness. From 2022 to 2023, a total of 3,165 “Made in the Entire Yangtze River Delta” robots were shipped, exceeding the set target ahead of schedule.
In fact, against the backdrop of an increasingly rapid pace of domestic substitution in the robotics industry, STEP had already, many years ago, proposed a comprehensive solution for enhancing the reliability of domestically produced robots—from the perspectives of structure, hardware, software, testing, and quality assurance—and received high praise and recognition from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Through the implementation of this solution, key challenges such as reliance on imported mid-to-high-end components, low reliability of domestically produced robots, and a low rate of domestic chip substitution have been addressed. As a result, mid-to-high-end core components have now been fully localized, significantly boosting the mean time between failures (MTBF) of robots.

In the field of motion control, STEP has also joined forces with several institutions and, over the course of seven years of industry-academia-research collaboration and interdisciplinary innovation, has successfully developed in-house core components and chips for motion control—including intelligent servo drives, high-precision encoders, foot-pedal controllers, and core R/D conversion chips—thus establishing a comprehensive system. A comprehensive motion control industrial chain covering chip-level, component-level, and system-level applications.

In addition, with the certification and delivery of the C919 large passenger aircraft and its entry into commercial operation, China’s domestically produced large aircraft have transitioned from the R&D phase to the stage of industrialization. XIAOAO, a subsidiary of STEP, has independently developed... “Aircraft Flexible Rail Automatic Drilling System,” It will accelerate the localization process of key equipment for the production and manufacturing of large aircraft.

At the heart of the new quality of productivity lies the use of innovation as the most critical factor driving industrial development. For STEP, innovation that truly creates value for customers and the industry is what truly counts as meaningful innovation. In our next episode, we’ll continue to explore this topic with you.
