On September 1st, 2022, under the organization of STEP Academy, leaders and engineers from R&D technology, process engineering, quality and other departments gathered together in Shanghai New Timeless Company Meiyu Road Factory to attend a two-day training on "DFM - Design for Manufacturing Reliability".

With the emergence of new projects and new technologies, during the process of new product development and introduction, we often encounter the problem of long development time due to poor introduction process of new products, which not only affects the delivery time, but also causes product quality problems due to poor product and process design, and creates a lot of trouble when the batch is put into production. Therefore, how to shorten the development cycle, improve the quality of product design and product process, reduce design costs and avoid batch quality problems has become a problem that product development must face, and is also a new issue that needs to be urgently addressed in R&D work.

 

 

Before the training started, Mr. Qian Wei, the assistant director of STEP Academy, introduced the meaning and purpose of the course to the participants. He encouraged them to learn DFM knowledge hard and apply the manufacturing-oriented design concept and method to the company's project development.

 

At the beginning of the training, Mr. Huang Wei, senior consultant of Zhiyuan Yiyi Consulting, firstly introduced the definition of DFM - Design For Manufacturing (DFM). Then he explained in detail about DFM and parallel engineering, DFM and error-proof design, the design of tooling and fixtures in DFM projects, and the design of production process and logistics in DFM projects. He also introduced DFM quality management, part number BOM management, product data management, project engineering change management and other important management methods commonly used in projects.

Throughout the training process, Mr. Huang interspersed his many years of experience in factory management with vivid and imaginative explanations so that the participants could easily grasp the course. In the classroom and after class time, Mr. Huang made patient and detailed explanation and interaction for the questions raised by the participants.

The two-day training was very informative, and the course broadened the participants' thinking and awareness of product development. They further understood and mastered the methods and logical ideas of New Product Introduction (NPI) and Design for Manufacturing Reliability (DFM) tools in project development from the perspective of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), which laid a good foundation for subsequent application in product development. It is also believed that the good practice of the participants in the subsequent development projects can better support the implementation of the New Product Introduction project in manufacturing reliability.
